Frame Stamping

E2991
Stamped on the inside of left frame rail adjacent to the t/c. Is this a sequential frame number?

I *thought* that the frame stamping number has to do with the production year (or calendar year). I seem to recall a '97 truck that I saw, and it had a "96" number in the frame stamp (if I recall). Which I was assuming the frame may have been produced/made in 1996, for a 1997 model. But then again, I'm basing this on nothing more than my own assumptions.
