Floor Rusted Through

Hello All,
I am considering joining the elite ranks of Defender 90 owners in the US. The one I am considering to purchase is in good shape but has a rust issue under the passenger side seat. How difficult is this to fix? I have read the forums and I know that people are generally worried about rust issues but this D90 seems to be pretty rust free other than that spot (per sight and pre-purchase inspection). What would be the appropriate channels to get something like this fixed?

Thanks in advance.

John

Rust in/on the seatbox isn't that big of a deal. The rust that you need to be a little concerned about is on the bulkhead at the floor junction and below the vents. You also need to check the frame at the extensions and rear cross-member. Of course you also need to check the door bottoms and if the tire carrier is on the rear door check the entire door since the weight of the tire can hurt a rust compromised door.

I may not know much about Defenders but I think the seat base is made of aluminum. Replacements for that part are easy to come by as well as the floors. The foot wells are another thing all together and may require complete disassembly of the majority of the vehicle to expose the bulkhead to properly repair. However, new bulkheads are also available. In fact there aren't too many major body components that you can't get replacements for.

Thing is with Rovers that a small area of corrosion that is visible means that there are lots and lots of other areas that are not visible that are equally if not more corroded. If you don't want to get involved with a complete money pit then likely best to move on.
