Hello all, the exterior windshield/dash vent doors on both my trucks need to be refreshed - new gaskets, hinge pins, etc. Is there anywhere that sells a complete "rebuild kit" for them, or am I better off just buying all the components individually? Seems like it should be a pretty easy job...any potholes to watch out for? TIA
When I did it I only ordered the 2 gaskets. The hinge pins were fine. If I remember right, I simply pulled the pins, then moved the door over enough to disconnect the linkage. You will need some weather strip adhesive to glue on the new gasket. Really not a very big job but really helped seal water out of the vents.
You have two options for the seal:
- 396139 or MUC4299 (the Series/rubber style seal that attaches to bulkhead)
- JAE000030 (the Defender foam style seal that attaches to backside of vent itself)
Foam style, *if* attached correctly will get the job done...but my experience is that the adhesive fails (even if you use your own) over time, and then you end up having exposed corners/etc that let in water. I have these on one of my Rovers, seems ok but needs fiddling once in a while.
Rubber style, I put these on the other truck and I actually like it. Haven't had any issues, makes the vents themselves a little stiffer/harder to open but I'm ok with that.
Lastly, for the vent hinge pins I recommend either upgrading to the Td5 style hinge pin & nuts (AIO710010 & AYH100810), OR just going with stainless steel versions (we have them here if that helps: Defender Stainless Steel Vent Hinge Pins).
