Expansion tank bleed hose

Ok, so I have replace this hose with a new one, and it is leaking again...
I am wondering if the little "plastic" peice in the middle is important. Does it perform any other purpose other then be a joiner of the two feeds?
I have replaced it for now with brass fittings, and stopped the leak but if this peice is important then i should get another and replace my brass monstrosity
Below is a pic of the "plastic" peice in question
