Engine timing

Ok, I'll just ask, as I don't have that portion of my owners manual. What is the correct timing setting for a '95 D90 with the 3.9l???

Along this subject, some people recommended advancing to 9 or 10 degrees BTDC. I tried this after installing my Mallory distributor and the truck was a little peppier, but the tailpipe started getting pretty sooty around the edge and it smelled pretty sooty too. I think perhaps the Mallory over-advance if the idle is already at 9 degrees. I dropped it back to 6 degrees all is fine again, and the performance isn't very noticeably worse, at least in my perspective.
