engine miss, severe on acceleration

'95 D90, manual trans. 70,000+ miles. Running fine until roughly 3-4 weeks post head gasket replacement to address coolant leak. Don't see how it would relate to my current issue but thought I should mention it.

On acceleration the engine misses noticeably. Unburned fuel builds up and numerous backfires, but very muted, occur. Less pressure on the gas pedal helps reduce the problem. Once I get to about 2000-2200 rpm and in 3rd gear it settles down and is bearable or even disappears. On flat ground not needing to jam it for additional mph it seems to run fine.

Checked plug wires, all plugs, rotor, and all appeared o.k.

Should mention also that the problem cured itself for a couple weeks when I was driving it more, then came back with apparent intent to make up for lost irritation and frustration. There have been afternoons when it's run well also. It's nowhere near a daily driver and never had this problem before in the 2 years that I've owned it during which time I don't think I put on less than 2,000 miles.

Any ideas what might be going on other than demon possession? I think I need an intervention here.

Thanks for any thoughts. Vic

Thanks, everyone, for the help. o2batsea was pretty close to the root cause. Little corrosion on the inside of the distributor cap so not good elec contact from there to the rotor. New distributor cap, rotor and, to be safe, new plug wires. Runs like crazy now. I'm a happy guy again.
