Electrical Fault WTF - Lights turn car on?? Video included

Watch the video.

After putting a new bulb in the back for the brake light/rear driving light, I went out for a drive with the lights on. I took the keys out expecting the truck to turn off, but it did not. I then turned the lights off, which shut the truck off. I then turned the lights on, and heard the fuel pump!!! SO WEIRD!! Here's a video of the faults.

Obviously it's a fault with the lights, but so weird that it's controlling the fuel pump!!

I don't think so. Both the key and the lights turn the fuel pump on, but I think only the keys will power the starter, and only turning the LIGHTS OFF when the engine is on, will truly turn the engine OFF.

Yeah, I'm thinking solar flares are finally causing some problems.

i bet something stupid like a relay for the spot lights is causing current to flow into that circuit ...

or witchcraft / voodoo

I have a real similar issue. When the lights are on brake lights don't work, when they are off the brake lights work but when I hit the brakes the headlights come on with the brake lights and when the lights are on and I turn off the ignition the truck won't shut off until I switch the lights off, same exact thing. It only started when I hooked up the brake lights that were not plugged in when I got the truck. Is there a relay for the brake lights that could be screwy? I am thinking about just re wiring the brakes completely if I cant figure it out

Did this happen after Greg spilled his stupid Maine soda all over your dash?

Since I know where your garage is, all I have to do is turn on the lights and I can take it? what time do you get off work?

My keys are always in the car, so it has never been that difficult to steal - you'd just need to get the garage door open.

That sounds logical - I just got a bunch of relays in the mail a month or two ago - I wonder if I switched it already, but if not then I'll test with a different one regardless.

So freaking weird though!!!

Hey Josh,

At least you don't have to have your girlfriend hold the key on while you jump out to hit the starter with a stick to start your truck! That's how my first date with my wife went. So embarrasing but we still laugh about it to this day. Sorry I have nothing technical to add to your problem.

Josh, check all the connectors at the back wiring behind the speakers. Sounds like you have a short there.

Since that's all I worked on yesterday that was my first thought. The driver's side rear red/brake light below the license plate had gone out 2 days after I replaced the last bulb the last time before Winter Romp. I was back there ysterday and unhooked the light from the lens.

The last time when I was taking the bulb holder

http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/XBP100180.cfm

off of the wiring connection behind it, the plastic plug on those wires that then holds it snugly to the bulg holder snapped upward, to where it wouldn't clamp down on the bulb holder anymore. So (of course) water has been getting between those two points. I cleaned the connections on the little plug and replaced the bulb holder with a new one and a new bulb, and all of my lights worked again. But now I have this new fun way of starting the car.

------ Follow up post added March 12th, 2012 11:30 AM ------

I'm going to be replacing the plug, so I'll just be doing the LED upgrade instead, since I'd have to cut the wires to put a new plug in anyway.

It's almost always what you touched last, or nearby.
