Dumb timing question

I'm trying to get the timing right on my brother's 94 d-90. The scale on the crank is so rusty the only thing I cam make out is TDC and none of the hash marks. I believe correct timing is 6 degrees (two hash marks) BTDC. I feel dumb asking this but which way is before and which was is after? I can't read the scale. Is it left or right of tdc? Thanks.

Right (Drivers side) is BTDC. The next large hash mark on the crank is 12 degrees, put it half way between TDC and the next large hash mark.

ATDC........TDC........ BTDC

12.............. 0.............. 12

thank you

That diagram is awesome. Thank you. I guess the reason it had no power and was running hot was due to the fact that I thought it was backwards.

hit the scale with a little fine sandpaper, then rub chalk into the numbers and lightly wipe the surface clean... the numbers will show up really well...
