Dumb Question

Just had a check engine light come on. Running fine. Where on a 97 do I have a lcd screen that displays the codes? If I don't what is the code reader to buy at autozone.

Thanks

Ron, do you believe it went off after I back out of your driveway. How funny is that. Probably a ABS issue or something. Or rough road.
Which one at pepboys? Should have one anyway.

Some auto parts places will bring out their device, and show you the code, hoping you'll buy a part from them.

I prefer ones that can display and record live data plus show the freeze frame data from the moment the trouble code appeared.

ebay item # 220087170738

this will show you what is going on in your engine and what the ECM *thinks* is going on, which can save you some $$ in resolving intermittent problems.

The ebay one is $200. You can buy one that reads and clears for 50-60.

yeah, they are out there a little cheaper I was just trying to show the model I have. There are times when just knowing and clearing the code is not enough. Then you are into it for parts that aren't needed and there goes your savings on the reader. Guess that isn't for everybody though, to each their own.

The ones with live data are quite useful when diagnosing a problem. It is nice to see exactly what/when something is going on with the O2 sensors or misfires etc.

I bought a $200 unit for my son for $87 on amazon.com and he is very happy with it. The reason I use Amazon over eBay is I get the ratings of the product instead of the seller.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I have heard that on OBDII at a certain mileage the CEL will automatically come on for a reminder of maintenance check.

I am not equipped wit OBD.

I second that. Amazon has good ones for much cheaper than retail.

I do believe that is the "Service Engine Soon" light.
