Question Dual Battery

So I'm been searching the forum for a dual battery setup...

And I'm even more confused as to what to get.

The goal: not to get stranded with dead battery.

1) I am installng a camera system in the car which will record movement in the car. Thus it will need a power source when the car is sitting and could possible drain the battery.
2) I tend to leave lights on.
3) I wash the car often and use the stereo when the car is off so that uses battery too.
4) so on and so on...

From Painless power.. I saw P/N 40120: Digital Power Manager which seems like it should the trick when having dual batteries.

But everyone talks about P/N 40102: 250 Amp Dual Battery Current Control System

or even http://www.powerstream.com/battery-isolator.htm

So I'm confused BEEEEEG TIME as to the total parts/kits I need to make sure I don't get stranded by simply blasting the stereo in the middle of the forest while BBQing the trout I just caught.

Thanks gents ,

~Jij

I bought this Dual Battery Kit: http://bluesea.com/category/2/productline/overview/329

It comes with an Automatic Charging Relay and switch. You can combine the batteries if one runs dead, run them in parallel or turn them off for storage. I have yet to install it though.

Which camera did you get? Let me know how the install and usage of that goes. I'm curious.

At the recommendation of Gustavo (Rugbier) I purchased this system and like it a lot so far...although I have only had installed for a week or so.

http://cgi.ebay.com/VORTEX-12V-DUAL-...ht_5132wt_1137

I tossed the cables and connectors for some heavier duty units and used relays like these

http://www.hifisoundconnection.com/S...d/0/rid/123284

This system allows you to have a house and accessory battery and isolates them so you won't drain the house battery with peripherals...but is smart enough to pull power from accessory battery to start the truck if needed. Also has a manual override in case you want to just drain both batteries (ie winching out of a tight spot!)

Looks relatively easy to install - am I right? As in, can a newb-electrical person do it without completely screwing it up?

I've installed a National Luna split charge, which looks vveeerrrryyy similar to the Vortex, for a D90 with a whomping stereo. We had an issue with it blowing the 50amp in line fuse 2x. After re-reading the installation instructions, it's possible that we had not pushed the right sequence of buttons on the split charge controller and given the batteries time to equalise as recommended, but their solution was to just up the amperage of the fuse!

So, it sounds like you need to have a dedicated start battery and a 'normal' operations battery for the camera and stereo as well a scar functions, so a split charge is the way to go. Another option could be a marine battery switch. I think simple is better.

Check out Overland Journal. They did a comparison of split charge systems last year.

Still lovin' the Rover?

It was very easy and straight forward. I took more time deciding where I would mount things than anything else...

I went with Hellroaring Technologies dual battery isolator/combiner with the remote module for switching between auto/off/on. Solid state, works great, excellent customer service.

I took 4-5 hours for me to install mine. I can send you a list of what you need if you go with the painless.

But I found out there are two different camps:
1 - Put the accessory load on the 2nd battery
2 - Put the accessory load on the Starter battery

Painless goes with option 2. There are advantages to both.

The one thing I would think hard about is the batteries. Many people "mix" batteries, but according to Optima and other battery cos, you want batteries of the EXACT same type and age. You should not mix a red for starting and the yellow for accessories. I went with two yellow..

National Luna is the clear choice.

I have a painless system with dual yellowtops. it has been very reliable, but the National Luna is better, and if I had known then about it, would have gone that route.

Jiman,

There is a phone number ( 1-800-609-9457 ) for the Vendor on ebay, call him, I've got mine for 142.50 shipped ( outside ebay ) and got it in 2 days .
The best part it is an IRONMAN, that sells for many many more dollars elsewhere.

Gustavo

I opted for a single battery and installed a monster DieHard Platinum PM-1. I built a custom SS bracket and installed a Blue Sea Systems fuse block and MAXI fuse.

Thanks Gustavo.. Called him and went ahead and purchased it.

National Luna is $375?! Little much for me. Hopefully the Vortex will hold out as good as the NL.

Now, off to Costco to buy 2 identicall batteries. Expenses.. expenses.. expenses.

Great job documenting Chris! Looks good now. I have a Blue Sea terminal in mine as well, but I think I need a larger one for all my gadgets.

Where did you get the maxi-fuse terminal?
