drivetrain issue

This weekend I was driving to the mountains and my truck started surging and jerking when I was going up hill. It felt like the truck was losing power then it would snap back to it. This happened several times and then today I drove 3 hours home and had no issues. Any idea what could be causing this. It is almost like the transfer case was acting up. Has anyone else had this happen to them? When it happens I just give it more gas and the truck goes back to normal.

Yes, it happens in and out of overdrive. The weird thing is that it started happening on Friday on the way to the mountains. On Saturday night it really was acting up. Then Sunday I drove home @ 3 hours at 70 mph plus and nothing happened.

are you sure its mechanical ? What you describe is very similar to what I have experienced when I get a watered down tank of fuel. Ethanol mixed fuel sucks

You know, I noticed that my truck backfired on Friday night during one of the episodes so I think and hope that you are right. I was on a mountain road in the middle of nowhere and I was praying that I would make it back to my farm. Breaking down in the mountains in the middle of nowhere without cell coverage and 23 degrees had me worried. I have been running premium in my truck.

------ Follow up post added November 18th, 2012 12:57 PM ------

My truck has a carb set up with edelbrock manifold.
