Door won't stay unlocked.

All:

My ROW '86 has wind up windows and 'pull up' door handles. When I unlock the drivers door, the plastic pull dibble goes up, but then it falls down again, re-locking the door. If I pull it up very gently, it will stay up- but closing the door or driving any distance results in self-locking. I took the door card off (not all the way, couldn't figure out how to remove the inslide release handle) and sprayed carb cleaner on the mechanism, but that made no difference. I then sprayed oil on the mechanism, again no dice. There is a little spring that sits horizontally on the door card side, but I am not sure if it is what holds the lock open? It seems as though a spring has weakened over time?

Have you experienced this, and if so what was the fix?

Thanks in advance,

Paul.

Discos that have this problem have a weak or broken spring in the latch. When I search eBay for the spring for a defender, I only see it for the tail door.

It would help if I knew which spring does the job of holding the button up. Then I could just replace it!

I think your door latch / lock assembly is self contained (riveted together). If I recall the push button function is by wire lever which goes into the latch assembly. If the spring inside is broken (probably a 2x twist ring type), then you probably need to replace the whole latch assembly. They show these on ebay for 23?
