Door lock and striker

Anyone ever had any experience replacing the driver and passenger side door lock/hadle and striker? Is it a big job or is it just a matter of replacing old with new?

Thanks for any help

The lift-up type like on the soft top? Super easy. 2 nuts and 2 screws on the door latch, and 2 on the striker. It takes playing to realign the striker when you put it back together, but its easy.

The only thing to consider, which took me a while to realize, is that the striker portion may need to be adjusted outward/inward. I kept trying up, down, up, down, left, right, left, right (B, A... nevermind), but nothing worked... and then I remembered what those thin metal shims were for.

I will take the old ones if you don't want them and are willing to part with them reasonably.

Metal shims!?!? Mine are PLASTIC?! ('97 SW)

And my drivers side door is getting harder and harder to close and latch ... any suggestions for improving the alignment ... aside from improving my IQ ... it looks dead simple, but I'll be darned if I can get the bits lined up well.

Keith - The shims on my 97 are metal with a white plastic coating. Sounds like you just need to move the striker out towards the latch a little. Last time we were out Beth noted more noise than usual coming in. The striker came loose and needed to be moved back in some to close the gap. The doors are a pet peeve for me. The driver/passenger doors are easier, the back door drove me nuts for a little while. HTH. Mark

Really! Thought they felt like plastic ?

I'll loosen the attachment and keep them in line with a square then move "outboard" a touch and retighten.

"Hi" to Beth and Marshall too

It is easy to do. I did mine the other weekend. I replaced the locks and handles. the one hting you need to look out for, which everyone has said is the striker position. i had to more my strikers out about 2-3mm each so that when i shut the door the latch would click down to its resting position so that i could use the door locks and lock my shit up!

if the striker is too far in you will be slamming the door very, VERY hard to make sure that third click on the latch happends... well this is if you want to lock your truck up too

-Ron, i have a Left and Right one if you want them. the locks are stuck in them, but im sure you can get them out if you try a little bit hard than i did. haha.

Hey Mike,
Take a look at this post, ECR gives some good info about replacing the striker: http://www.defendersource.com/forum/...hlight=striker

If anyone has a couple strikers that would be great. I can send a few bucks and pay for shipping.

Keep in mind that new striker also have to be adjusted. There are two screws on holding the rubber buffer on, these sometimes need to be screwed down to compress the buffer - the the bottoms of the screws have to be filed off. When I installed Janey's front ones, the right side went on perfectly as supplied, but the left door required the buffer to be compressed almost by half.
