Don't buy Cheap Ignition Coils!

today after driving my 90 to work and back and about 30+ miles to get the exhaust leak fixed, the ignition coil totally failed on my while driving.
The truck cut out and would sporadically try to restart and then die..
it seemed like it was out of fuel (gauge read 1/2 tank), and just cranked..

trouble shooting included changing the following items on the road side
computer and fuel pump relays
computer
add 2 Gals of gas,
check wires.

now.. it got serious
change Ignition amp module back to the old known good one
and finally i changed back to the old known coil

and voila back in business

after each step i retested (tried to start it) and nothing was working until i did the coil.

that sucked.. but with some help from derek for the gas and the socket its back and running great.

moral to the story..
Don't buy cheap coils
carry some spares
and have tools (i learned this one today, i usually have them)

here is the culprit...Click image for larger version

it was the $29 one from AB.. no brand listed on it..
RTC5628 was the part number - i just ordered it in april this year.. installed maybe in may?

so less than 2000 miles on it (if that, since i only got the timing sorted so it does not pop a CEL every 15 minutes last week)

Bosch replacement in bound from AB for the in truck spares depot.

I can highly recommend this. It has served me well for over ten years. I was also able to open my plug gap by .002 and get that good spark. It can be mounted upside down also.

I'm sure it would. Even upside down. I never used that cover so that might be part of my success. Good cool though. Good luck on your search.

When it comes to ignition components I always recommend Genuine.
