Do you have to replace the tappet slider retaining bolts

Hi Guys,

Just skimming though the torque specs for my 300tdi head bolts and saw the manual stating that the tappet slider retains bolts be replaced...is this totally necessary?

Mine are in perfect shape, threads perfect and no corrosion or deformity, wonder why they are one time use bolts.

I usually do everything by the book but this has me wondering and besides that, don't know if it's available locally.

Cheers.

I can't see any valid reason to replace them. They need thread lock.

They are to be replaced as per the manual. They do an important function for the engine, and are very cheap as OEM. Your cam, tappets, followers should all be new OEM during a rebuild. You can reuse the steel holders if they have no wear on the inside. No threadlock reuse fix on old tappet retainer bolts. The threads on all bolts are designed to deform when torqued, no guarantee on those used ones. You're not saving any money reusing them. Same applies to conrod nuts should be new high grade ones. Toss the old ones away.

Internals of the engine is one of the last places I would want to be installing used parts. For something so cheap, it would be silly not to use new ones.
