Do all NAS Defenders have the R380?

Ive read somewhere that they upgraded to R380 in mid 94'. Wondering if there was a number or something on the truck that would tell me if its supposed to be equipped with it or not.

Thanks

R380 Starts with 61A00001J but many before that were switched over to R380 as well.

If you're shopping for a '94 D90 the easiest way to tell is the shift pattern on the shift knob.
LT77 reverse on the left, R380 reverse on the right.

1993 NAS 110s and about the first 12-1300 NAS D90s shipped with the LT77. I would say most of the NAS D90s got upgraded to R380 under warranty and a good number of the NAS 110s. Today, it is rare to find a NAS D90 with an LT77, but a few are still floating around.

This spring when I was actively looking for a ST to buy, I came across 3 94's that still had the LT77. A little surprising since the upgrade was a recall done under warranty.

I've heard that the LT77 was too clunky for US customers, and they moved to the R380 to appeal to the buying public. Not sure how true that is. I've also read that the LT77 is a fine transmission that is better matched to the V8 than the R380. Again who knows where that info came from, and how reliable the source was.

The LT77 requires a bit more patience in shifting, and perhaps the fast shifting American customers of the era tried to fast-shift and ground the crap out of the gears and syncros. Who know.

Mine still has the LT77, not sure why the PO never had the change done. I'd ask him, but he's dead. It works fine for me. I think the LT77 is more manly than the R380...

It wasn't a recall. It was done as a warranty change. If you came in with any issue on the lt77 the fix was to swap it for a r380.

I got that from the service mngr at Land Rover Portland, he told me it was a recall and offered to anyone who had the LT77.

Me too...I have actually driven several trucks with R380's and felt they all shifted worse than my LT77. Now my clutch, that is a different story!

Who can forget that early R380 had its share of lubrication issues.

Yeah I heard it from a tech as well. If it was a recall then there would be no lt77 out there at this point.

You would think no one would deny recall work but who knows.

That's exactly what he said, that it was hard to believe that someone would turn down a brand-new transmission for free.

I got one that is better. The shop I used to go to had a 94 in for a transmission job. It had a LT77 that was toast. The customer insisted they source another LT77. Wanted to keep it original.

Which I think explains that the tech was misinformed. I think Barry's right, if a LT77 came in for service, they put an R380 in, but it was never a voluntary recall by Land Rover.

There was no recall but as Ron stated it was part of operation pride. LRNA bought a boatload of surplus R380s from the Australian Army for very, very short money and replaced the lt77 for any customer that complained...at the drop of a hat.

Lt77

I was under the impression that it was the LT77S that was installed in my early 94 D90 (Canadian number 18).

Marc-Andre,

Your truck had an LT77 from the factory. You are correct it is really an LT77S
