Distributor Falling Apart

So my truck 1995 d-90 died the other day, and I got it running again which is all great and well. I decided while I had it in the driveway I would be a good loving owner and replace the spark plugs etc. When I pulled the distributor cap off I noticed my distributor looked like sh*t the plastic cover was cracked etc. When I went to slide the new rotor on and put the cap back on it wouldn’t go back together. We tried a bunch of stuff, somehow the distributor came apart or something. I have never gotten into my distributor before and don’t really know what to do or look for. I had been contemplating switching it out already for a Mallory or MSD any thoughts on that or which one I should go with? It is my daily driver so I wouldn’t mind having it running while I wait on the new one. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You broke it by pulling up on the rotor as opposed to breaking the old rotor off.

Last time I tried to pull the rotor off and the whole shaft goes too popping off all the springs for the counter weights inside, had to pull it out and put it all back together again, PITA as it happened to me on two of my D's. Thank God it won't happen on my 97'.

sorry I have never heard of that before, how does that exactly work? And since thats already done what broke when i pulled it up? Since i do of offroading and am on the trail that doesnt seem very practical, I am surely gonna get a mallory or msd now. I have heard the unilite is a good route to go with a little modification. Thoughts on that? alot

A bunch of us run the Mallory--not sure who if anyone is running the MSD. You can find the mallory information and part numbers in other posts here--just do a search.

Happened to mine a while back. I bought a rebuild kit and put the distributor back together, it was a much cheaper fix and about 3000 miles later runs better than ever.
