Update

Update:

Diffs swapped over, brake line 'T' removed from old axle, new brake line from body to axle installed, joint between axle & diff case sealed, axle shafts back in, 4-hole thingy reinstalled & cotter pin inserted, ready to go under the rig!

I'll post an update tomorrow, hopefully when the job is complete.

Thanks,

Paul.

Done. What a pain in the a$$! Hardest parts were 1) getting everything aligned to attach the new axle and 2) getting the bleed nipples to break loose so I could bleed the system.

Pile of old stuff (Note rusted through shock covers)

The biggest difference is that the rear wheels now sit about 1.5" inboard. That should mean less crap gets thrown up the side of the rig!

I also fitted a front license plate, as I really don't want a ticket.

Next project- new front axle (used setup from a RHD 110) and black fender flares.

Note: I will have a set of four 1.5" Aluminium spacers for sale after I install the front axle.

Thanks for all the help!

Paul.

Well done.

Is the width reduction due to no longer needing spacers in the rear after putting in the disco axle?

Pretty sure that's the case. I measured both axles & it looked like the wheels would sit the same distance apart- except of course the Freestyles wouldn't fit over the hubs on the drum braked axle.

Doug:

The axle that is on there is shot (lots of rust, pitted balls, nasty noise & lots of slack in the diff, leaking oil, joints badly worn, pads badly worn, discs scored, etc. etc.).

So after some discussion in this post;

http://www.defendersource.com/forum/...ad.php?t=51706

I was going to refurb mine. But I wanted to get away from having to use spacers, so when a '96 RHD Defender axle came up, I bought it.

Cheers,

Paul.

Nice work Paul! I did not even get a cell phone call.

IMHO it looks much better without the spacers.

PS on the new disco axle, make sure the breather is cleaned out so it does not pressurize the axle and cause a leak. Undo the nut, clean it out, and blow through the line to make sure it is clear.

Good call Ron! Axle breather was completely plugged!
