diff Lock Light Illuminated but not locked

i was on the trails this weekend and initially after engaging the diff lock, the light came on but i felt the vehicle slipping and had tire spin which led me to realize even tho the light was on , the differentials were not locked. it took a few attempt to disengage and reengage the diff lock before they finally locked (on flat ground, rolled etc etc) any ideas of what is worth checking out to get to the root of the issue of the light coming on before they actually lock? the car does sit a good amount of the year with a few miles put on every month. a friend suggested i need to get it into low range now and then as well as lock the diffs which i understand will help in the future but looking to solve this issue ... thanks

Look up in the manual on the adjustment of the diff lock linkage. It is pretty clearly explained there.

The lamp is on duty when the fork is moved in place by the spring.

So it might be possible the the fork has broken off the cam?
