Defender Wont start

I just purchased a 1989 110. It arrived in the US, had a little difficulty starting. started a few days if i hit the gas while starting. Then it did not.

Took it and got the carburetor, tank and fuel lines cleaned. Started better, then died. put a new air filter in, started much better for two days, Now has completely died.

It turns over great, but the motor just wont catch, I have checked the battery and added more fuel. I just cant get it to start.

Any advice would be greatly appreciative, trying to save the money from getting it towed to the mechanic.

Is your mechanic a Land Rover specialist?

E.G., if you took it to Pep Boys to get the carb cleaned...

Yes he is a Land Rover Specialist, very trusted in the area, and yes manual coke. I just tried to turn it over for 30 seconds, pump the gas three times, pull the choke and then start it again but nothing.

Ok, good on you for using a LR specialist. What the mods here & elsewhere tend to post is that you should download the service manual for your beast & to start in on the checklist for "no start" situations. Blackfield brought up plugs & wires - is there any indication that it has had a tuneup in recent years? - if not, plugs can usually be had from local stock & wires can often be had same-day or next-day. In the meantime, putting dielectric grease in the spark plug boots can possibly get you started, especially if it's a wire issue. And can you hear your fuel pump coming on when you turn on the key? Do you know how to check for spark?

Also, I'm probably speaking above my pay grade with this, but you probably want to keep it on choke when you're actually trying to start it. Anyone?
