Defender EV

Anyone else catch the episode on the defender 5 door EV going around the test track on Velocity Channels Fifth Gear ? The thing handles descents and water crossings better than its Puma brethren. Its rated for deeper water crossings than the diesel versions since you cannot hydro-lock an electric motor.

My point was....adding a snorkel to prevent a diesel sucking in water is a lot cheaper and easier than waterproofing a complete EV power system. Of course at the cost of the EV system it does not matter much.

John,
I got your point. Like you, much prefer the tdi devil I know well, to electrical gremlins.
Just thought the fact rover even built an EV defender to play with the technology interesting.

Don't get me wrong. I think Evs are cool and the tech interesting. They just don't make financial or environmental sense. One can only imagine the cost of this defender.

I believe I read somewhere that they built a couple of these for a specific safari use or something in Africa. I saw a couple at JLR when I was at the Factory and on the Proving Grounds. I didn't get to see one driving or get up close, but I saw a few sitting parked in the infield of the Test Track.

Nice video. I linked to earlier articles on these in my build thread. I don't think you can buy these yet - they are just R&D. I have no plans to wheel mine but ware proofing it all isn't as hard as it sounds and I like the fact they are taking an assumed negative and showing it's actually a positive.

Now if anyone wants to sponsor me building an electric wheeling rig, please contact me

I would seriously consider buying one. Electricity is cheap and plenyfull in Quebec. I'm convinced that there are environmental benefits to zero emissions D90's running on hydro-electricity. I'm already trying to convince my wife I need to get one.

We have significant tax advantages and subsidies for electric vehicles here. We even have R&D funding for EV programs that where announced last week from the government of Quebec.

What build thread is this? You have me interested.

I've thought about removing the drive from my rear axle and powering that electrically. However, I don't have the time, budget, or workshop to take that on at the moment. It's an idea that intrigues me though.

Nothing juicy on the electric side yet but I'm plugging away at it.

yeah I watched this episode and thought it was pretty cool until at the end she had mentioned the range was like 60 miles. I already feel pretty limited with my limited range now.

Yes range is certainly an issue. But there are applications well suited for it.
