Defender 90 Roll Cage half - hows it work?

Looking at getting a D90 ROW 200TDi model with a hardtop. Concerned about safety. Cant afford full external cage so looking at front external cage. Seen kits that have the front lower legs, and then without, and then also for the back of the cage that attaches only to the hardtop? Are the front legs needed? Is there something stable in the hardtop to bolt to? Or does it need an internal hoop as well? Does the top do the work its supposed to without an internal hoop? It's an early 90's ROW so it doesn't have the tubular bulkhead.

The external front always connects to some internal parts. If the roof were strong enough to bolt to without any extra support, then you wouldn't need a roll cage in the first place.

Just the roof, the front is attached to the chassis. I wouldn't trust that to keep me safe in a roll over. I would want the inner hoop as well.

That is a glorified light bar. It might keep your windshield from getting crushed, but you'll still get a nasty headache when the roof collapses.
