Defender 300TDI smoking

I have a 1996 Defender with the 300TDI.
i was off road and submerged the truck. The engine stoped once it dipped to low in the water. Once the truck was removed from the water, the air cleaner and filter was removed and water drained from the air intake pipes. the engine was turned over in short rotations to push the water out. the engine started and ran fine with lots of power, although lost of initial white smoke.
the oil was changed, air filter renewed, gas tank drained and refilled. Now on cold starts it smokes and when driven for the first 1/2k the smell is very Diesel and white smoke.
after the 1/2 k drive, and i am out of my nieghbourhood, it runs fine.
Any suggestions.

Sounds like your timing is retarded. Perhaps the timing belt was stretched in this incident? You might check that out if cleaning the sedimentor doesn't do it.

Did you remove the injectors before turning the engine over? If not there is real risk of damage.

I don't know about the brakes, only their unreliability.

That would not matter. Any possible damage is done when it stalls...

I'm serious about the con rod. When these engines hydrolock, they bend con rods. Usually it is one cylinder, whichever one was in the compression stroke. They will still run perfectly fine. Compression is reduced and so cold starting is affected. The cylinder in question does not combust until the temps get high enough. This causes the smoke until you get into a bit of throttle. Once warmed up, you won't notice any problems.

Have a compression test done. If that shows something pull the head and check piston stickout. Pulling the head is quick and easy.
