defender 200 tdi turbo replacement

Hello,

My turbocharger on the my defender 200 tdi needs to be replaced. I'm having a hard time finding the replacement turbo unit for the defender. (I had one lined up on ebay-uk but I fell asleep on the bid) My question is: can I take a discovery turbo and change out the mounting parts from my broken unit? The actual turbo should be the same for the two. has anyone done this? I'm not sure if the turbo I have can be rebuilt. Any suggestions?
thanks in advance

If I had to replace mine now I'd consider getting one from Alisport with the bushing->bearing conversion and possibly slightly larger. There's also I believe Turbocentre who does rebuilds.

Turbochargers.com in Houston rebuilt my Disco 200Tdi turbo. You may be able to use the disco turbo but it would have to be "clocked" because it discarges in a different direction than the Defender version due to the different location.

Like Mike, I had mine done by a local turbo shop. Turbo Expert not to name anyone. As the unit wasn't total Kaput they only charge for rebuilding it and properly balance it. About 350$. Cheaper I guess then buy a new unit or going to the troubles of second hand with shipping & duty cost... Wish you luck!

I've got a bunch of stuff from them, was wondering what the difference between:

Brand new (Genuine)
and
Brand new (Garrett) was?

Just had mine rebuilt by Turbo Auto, looks pretty but it will be a while before I get to run it.

What about it makes it need to be replaced, vs rebuilt?
I've rebuilt a lot of turbochargers and it's unusual for one to be so far gone it can't be rebuilt.
If you can get it rebuilt, ask the shop if they balance the compressor and turbine wheels. If they say no, find a shop that does. Not all of them do, but it's done on a proper rebuild.
