dealership is screwing me...

I took it to the dealer, knowingly...that it was going to be outrageous and now looking for other options. i have read a number of the posts and here in the northern virginia area i have decided to go with loudoun rova. I dont know if it is bad business for me to buy the parts i need offline and bring them in to have the shop install them?

If so, does anyone know of a shop in NOVA that allows that? i had meineke install a full exhaust system that i bought offline...cost $500 cheaper, but this isnt exactly a mustang...

So the dealer says i need a new evap pump and gas cap, front drive shaft joint, rear driveshaft flex and that my headgasket and front cover are leaking.

The rover has no marks under it ever that would suggest it is leaking anything.

thoughts?

Are you talking about the Discovery in your profile or a Defender? What year and engine?

get a second opinion ... or ask him why he has come to this diagnosis.

Do you have CEL on?

Well here are those two parts cheaper from us - http://landroverparts.roversnorth.co...=PLD196&type=0
http://landroverparts.roversnorth.co...px?code=PLN901

And there are shops that let you bring your own parts, but some will add a bit extra to the labor rate, some won't.

You need oxygen sensors. That will turn off the check engine light. The rest of it I would only fix if they ding you at the emissions place.

if you are just getting the safety inspection then buy a code reader and erase the code before you take it in for inspection.

prob 1/100th of the time it would take you to do it X the shop's rate

Oxygen sensors are about a hundred bux each. I think you need four, but I may be mistaken on that particular year. They install with a 17mm box wrench. Or is it a 19mm. I forget.

O2 sensors aren't going to fix your defective DMTL pump, or your gas cap that doesn't thread down completely.

Everything they listed wrong with your Disco are very common problems.

So, let's try to resume this: You took your Disco to a place to get looked at because it is failing inspection or emission? My truck passes inspection with a CEL being on.
So, I think you have two goals:
- pass emission testing (where the CEL needs to be off and functioning)
- pass inspection testing
One a little less important goal
- get your truck/engine/etc running as optimally as possible.

I would ask the shop to classify what goes in which category so you know what you -have- to do vs. what you should do soon.
I think the gas cap is likely an emission item (my D1 had to get a new gas cap at the last testing). But don't take my word for it, get the shop to tell you.

Likely the engine leak is neither emission not inspection. Not sure how your truck/engine, but I have heard many stories of D1 V8 4.0L being misdiagnosed with headgasket issues where "only" the valley pan gasket needed to be replaced (granted once you are doing the valley pan, easy to so the rest and easier to explain to anyone that does not turn wrenches).

2 cents!

Probably have it done by the time you've finished reading this thread.

Agree with Bill 100% - change 02s and then run the truck for 10 minutes on the highway before you go in. Works like a charm for me. Do other emissions work only if required.

As for places in NOVA that will take your parts, Loudoun Rova and Arlington Motorcars will do it sans extra cost. I'd personally choose AM before LRova.
