Shifter Knob Removal

I hate to ask and I probably am overlooking a simple release but I am replacing the illumination unit (shifter) and wanted to inquire re shift knob removal.

I have the service manual but it seems the knob removal is not addressed (of course there is detailed direction on how to remove the sun visors )

The transfer case knob simply unscrewed but I assume there is some other type of release for the main shifter.

auto or manual? My manual knob just unscrews like the T-case knob.

It automatic (t-handle) - I tried to gently turn it but was not sure.

I don't have an automatic, but most T-handle shifters I have seen have some kind of screw into the side which you undo and then lift up the handle. Generally they are splined or have a keyway to prevent twisting. Look for a sticker, trim piece or plug that might be hiding a screw.

no trim covering any screw that I can find on the shifter.

I attempted just pulling upward but she wont budge. Man I just dont get it . . . it should be simple

Question D90 wgn - Automatic Shifter T- Handle Removal

Sorry to re-post re this issue. Replacing illumination unit on a 97 Wagon (automatic) and cannot get the shifter handle off. I realize it should be simple but it does not want to pull off (like my prev disco) nor does it seem to want to unscrew. If some one has removed these I would really appreciate the assistance.

If I remember right. You pull the button out. Does the top cover pop off also? C'mon it is not surgery.

On the Disco, you pop the cover on the top of the handle off with a screwdriver from the side and then pry off the circular clip holding the handle on. Hope that helps.

Also, the lights underneath (on the disco) the gear selector can be accessed without taking the handle off. you just pry off the bezel and they plug in from either side.

Thanks Dave, just spoke with someone who advised the same. I had considered the top possibly coming off but the seam must be dirty thus I could not see it. I understand there is a snap ring under there. I am replacing the entire illumination unit not bulbs.

I don't think it comes off; i.e., I think it's all one piece.

The workshop manual procedure for removing the center console includes unscrewing the transfer case knob, and removing the trim piece around the shift lever opening, but does not specify removing the shift lever knob. That leads me to believe it is not removable (note also it will have interior parts, due to the lock button).

The procedure for dropping the transmission specifies that the lever is disconnected from the tranny from below (i.e., pull the pin that connects the lever to the linkage). So I'm not at all sure the knob is removable.

hmmm . . . Barry, it would certainly seem she would come off. Heading out now to attempt to remove the upper section (supposed to be a cap) which is supposed to reveal a snap ring.

As I stated in the beginning this prob seems rediculous, as it does to me, but nonetheless I need to get it off

Lightbulb remove the (automatic) shifter handle on a 97 D-90

OK, first I would like to thank those who took the time.

Also thanks to Dave as well as LR of Columbia's Barklay Wiggs who were dead on. Of course it would have been better if I'd had daylight and a good nights sleep . . . as after same it was a bit easier to determine.

For future reference to anyone needing to know how to remove the (automatic trans) shifter handle on a 97 D-90.

1- The top plate which is textured can be popped out using a tiny screwdriver (note: once you clean the area arround same one side will have a bit more of a gap than the others)

2- Inside there is a retaining clip. Lift the clip/bushing up with needlenose pliers and rotate 1/2 turn. This will allow you to remove the clip (slide over). Remove clip and then lift the bushing out (under the clip) which holds the button. You can now slide the button out (may as well clean it)

3- Note there is a small spring on the inside right (just FYI to avoid loss) .

Then there is a 19mm nut (will require deepwell)

Of course then she pulls right up.

Thanks for the posting. Once I cleaned all the grime out of the seam, I can see that the top cap is a separate piece.

GREAT - I am doing the same operation now and will try that. I have the whole thing apat down to the nut (but BROKE the clip apart! but she's not pulling up. I'll pull HARDER now...finger crossed...

Breaking the clip is common. I've done it many times. No big. There is an updated clip, not for breaking but.... Ask your Rover parts supplier for the udated "E" clip for the auto shifter on a '96 DI. (same clip) It should be $1 or so.
This may be a question that proves your parts suplier's worth.

Cool thanks Mike. It came off and I just "pulled the appendix" since I was already in there (the park solenoid). Now I have to figure out what to do with the wiring so I can start it up, etc.
