Cool D90 stalling/soaring idle

D90 is stalling after engine rev/slow down, and sometimes soaring idle. Is it the little solenoid thing screwed into the intake?

Probably. It is the stepper motor or, in american, the idle air control valve. I believe on a 1997 it is the same as a disco I but don't quote me.

Yes it is the same as a Disco. There is a NAPA cross but I can't find it right now. Try removing it and cleaning it with carb/brake cleaner 1st. Worst case you will have to visit a dealer (or somebody with access to a Rovacom/Autologic, etc.) and have the base idle re-set.

STP makes some great intake cleaner that will disolve the carbon build up. As worked for me on several occasions.

I've had no issues with the Chevy Astro equivalent.

Thanks Ron. Couldn't find the part # when I looked the other day. Only diff between the 2 is the AC part is gold colored and the LR is black. AC part is a LOT cheaper.

Be prepared for the possibility that replacing the IAV alone may not cure the problem if the ECU has lost touch. The ECU has a 'learned' range for the plunger and sometimes if there is a sudden change (Cleaning, fault, replacement, etc.) then it will spend all its time over and under correcting itself and your idle will vary from stalling and almost nothing to 2 or 3k. Fix is to take it to somebody with a LR diagnostic computer and have them reset the ECU and the base idle setting.

Just put one on my 97 a few weeks ago. Advanced Auto Parts Borg Warner #21774 - Idle Air Control Valve $43.19+tax. However it didn't fix my problem of stalling as I come to a stop.
