If you're in the suburbs:

George at Lindberg in Lake Zurich: george@lindbergauto.com (20818 North Rand Road
Lake Zurich, IL 60047 (847) 438-3600)

There's also The Rover Shop in Lake Villa: http://www.therovershopinc.com/

Downtown, I was told there's a guy off Broadway somewhere, but I can't find the email from my friend with his name.

HTH.

Dane - The guy downtown is Henry at lakeside automotive, it's on broadway his number is 773-728-2301

He was recommended by a friend who works for a Porsche dealer.

Good luck - let me know how the service goes.

Henry works on my wife's Volvo - he does a decent enough job....and compared to the Volvo dealership he's a friggin saint.........but Blago looks like a saint compared to those aholes. Can't say anything about Henry's work on a Defender, or ability to accomplish what you are looking to do.

For Defender-specific guys, I've been told that Hinsdale Land Rover has a mechanic who is a Defender specialist - John. I've also been told that Lake Villa mentioned above does a good job, and finally, another local swears by Knauz in Lake Bluff - ask for Ron.

You can also join the Chicago Land Rover Club and get plenty of advice there...

I'll recommend therovershopinc.com
they have done very well by me on my D90s, D110 and countless other rovers of various descriptions...Glenn is a master rover tech and knows all the systems on all models inside and out...they have done a 300tdi conversion and the fuel and hydraulic and electrical on my 110 restoration...what I do is drive the truck up there...they take me to the train and I take the metra train home til its ready...then train it up...they also can tow and are very reasonable in pricing...way better than the dealers...
good luck
George

Hey JP!
I recommend John at Land Rover Hinsdale too. He is the best I have met so far in the Chicago area.

I'm really surprised at the dealer recommendations. I would never take a 15 year old car, especially one like a Defender, to the dealer. $100/hour rates and sleazy 'service advisors' ruin it for me.

I can't imagine the LR dealer is any better than the Audi dealers I stay away from in Chicagoland.

The local rover club seems to recommend the place in Lake Villa and George Hanley at the place in Lake Zurich. I have not heard of any other Defender specific non-dealer mechanics.

The guy on Broadway was on the recommendation of a friend who's worked at Porsche dealers his whole career, not from the club or other LR sources.

Take your Defender to a dealer at your own risk. I've seen plenty of posts where the dealers are clearly ripping people off and suggesting service that's not needed.

"Found" - Dealer Service Managers are horrible, no arguments there. You have to wade through the BS and be prepared to haggle, spit, and swear, all of which may deter going to a dealer. That doesn't change the fact that an individual mechanic who has excellent skills works there. He may have merely chosen the best employment option for himself. I understand that John at Hinsdale has the ability to take a Defender apart and put it back together again, whilst swapping out engines for a TDI. For me, that qualifies him as a capable mechanic. For many, his employer may deter his use. To each their own.

A buddy of mine takes his Moke up to Lake Villa and has been satisfied with their service. I believe that many area owners use the guys in Lake Villa, which likely speaks to their service and capability. I haven't used them, and therefore don't have a comment, other than to say that they quoted me the same price for bushing replacement as the dealership in Hinsdale.

Cheers and happy (re)building!
