D90 300tdi

Anyone out there know a good source for a low time 300tdi I could put in a '95 D90 SW. I'm also looking for a good shop that could do the install, preferably in the Pacific Northwest. The ultimate would be a galvanized tdi chassis.

Not sure about the engine source but Shane at RoverHybrids did mine and I am very satisfied. He is in Redding, CA. See www.roverhybrids.com
Also, Doug Shipman at Ships Mechanicals in Portland has extensive experience with the conversion and may have some motors. 503-252-5566
Both will do a very good job, but this isn't a cheap conversion.

Clark, thanks for the info. I've heard of Rover Hybrids, but Ships is closer to me. What cost range would one expect to pay?

New motors are running more than 10k right now when available. There is no reliable source for the low-time motors you speak of - naturally every tom, dick, and nigel that is selling a used motor claims it came from a low-miles truck, but that's usually BS. If I was buying right now I would order up a rebuild from M&D Engineering.

You might also consider the 2.8 power stroke, the kit for a V8 is listed at 5348 GBP ($8929 at todays exchange rate)

It would have more power than a 300TDI and would be new

Jim,thanks. I've seen the adds out of Vancouver and the only possible advantage there is you'd supposibly get all the ancillaries whereas buying overseas you'd have to source all that individually.

Excuse my ignorance, Dave. Was the 2.8 ever sold in the U.S.? This could be a good solution for those concerned parts availability.

Bryan,

Doug has a 300tdi D90 at his shop that is currently up for sale. I have seen it and its in nice shape. Roof rack, dual fuel tanks, Wolf breather and a bunch of other fancy extras. Even if you decide to do a conversion on your own rig, Doug's your guy.

Bryan........

You might look at the price differential between what the 300 TDi at Ships is selling for, versus what it would cost you to have the conversion done. It may be cheaper, and certainly quicker, to buy the 300 TDi and sell yours. If Ships installed the motor it may be one of those new units that RN offered a few years ago.
I agree with Jim - I don't trust motor mileage from the UK and while my motor was supposed to have only 35,000 miles, Shane said it was so dirty it looked like 135,000. Who knows. I trust the importer, its our nefarious cousins across the sea that I question.
