If you give a bit of a shit - buy a VIN swap where you know the history of the donor
If you want to bend the rules - buy a 25 year old with updated parts ( like one of Neil's women )
If you want to be totally legal - buy a NAS defender or 25 year old with age related parts.

This is not legal advice but basically a barometer for what kind of defender you should consider.

Well put!!

I would add one more:

If you want to own and drive a Puma with no risk of comebacks - you need a passport, a visa and a taste for foreign food.

$.02

I suppose I can throw my $.02 in here as well...

I think your safest bet is to get a 25 year old truck with all original parts on it and then bring it over and restore it...

HOWEVER:

I really think their is a market for a "kit" along these lines.

1. Kit would INCLUDE a state-side, register 25 year old vehicle. could just be a total rust bucket, but its LEGAL
2. Would have all the parts in a "kit" to restore it.

I am SURE this is going to be affordable But some of us (like me) are always in need of a project... this is something that I would be all over... something that I could get a storage unit rental and put it together on the weekends ... wouldn't matter how long it takes...

that might have been $.04 but ... there ya go

Maybe the "Kit" could be a CKD (minus engine/transmission). Funny you wrote that.... I did a Google search just a few hours ago looking for CKD information....

That would work... how cool would it be to get a couple of pallets full of parts... it would be like a giant lego set

The more I look into rebuilding an imported 110, the more I think I need to look into building one as a kit car. I would be replacing just about everything except the rear tub and front fenders any way. I don't give a crap about the originality of the truck. I want the capability. Dropping $15k for title, tub, and VIN just doesn't make any sense.

Once LR officially stops production of the Defender, will it then be legal to build a 110 from the ground up and register as a kit car? Seems like the exact same story as the Cobra ... stopped production due to safety regulations, and kit cobra world exploded.

Ha! I was talking about this today.

Land Rover had that several years ago.

It was called CKD... Complete Knock Downs.

The firts I heard of this was in 2003 when one was shown at SEMA.

Some folks here had a few of them.

EDIT... I see Loic mentioned too. I bet we were talking about it back then.
