d-90 200tdi vs. 109 w/ 2.5 & overdrive

I have a great 1984 d-90 with a disco 200tdi. Its in great shape with new doors, soft and hard tops, 2" lift and recovered seats and newer paint. I purchased it from site member Chuck Lemoine a few years ago (a great guy to deal with and he was very honest about the truck). Now I am considering buying a 1960 series II listed on this site. It has a series IIa motor (rebuilt) with a fairey overdrive. It looks to be really well maintained. I am considering switching back to a series, but am looking for advice on driveability in normal metropolitan traffic (around NYC). The defender keeps up just fine for me with the local traffic. I used to have a series IIa with no overdrive... It was slower than fudge through a funnel and had a comfortable top speed of 45mph. However, the fact that it had no overdrive and had kind of a cobbled together chevy 250 conversion may have not given me a fair gauge of the potential of a series truck. I am looking for opinions / comparison on ability of the series to keep up with normal traffic and highway driving. The owner says it cruises comfortably at 70mph with overdrive. I am considering the change because I would like more room and I cant afford a defender 110. I also like the iconic 109 look. Also the series seems reasonably priced at $13,500. A pic of the truck can be found as follows: http://www.flickr.com/photos/49338500@N08/sets/
Thanks for any advice or opinions.

I used to have a 109 three door with a 2.5 petrol engine and no overdrive. At the time I liked it and drove it as my daily driver including a lot of hwy miles but it was not in the same league as a 200tdi coil sprung truck. The 200 tdi is faster, cheaper to run, better brakes, and better off road. I wouldn't make the change back if I had to loose the newer rover.

Thanks for the perspective Andrew. I wonder how much difference the overdrive makes to the driving experience. I've never driven a series with an overdrive.

I've also had a 2.25L Petrol 88" with an overdrive. It was not as quick as the 2.5L Petrol but it was close. The top speed was no faster than the 2.5L 109, in fact the 2.5 was a bit faster on the hwy until you got to a down hill or had a tail wind then the overdrive let the 88" have a higher top end without over reving the engine. The overdrive mainly made the truck quieter do to reduced engine speed, it didn't really make it any faster other than going down hill or with a tail wind.
