From the Cummins web site, "The project is part of Cummins’ growing presence to the enthusiast market as the company explores launching a ‘crate engine’ business where consumers would be able to buy 50-state legal Cummins engines for swapping into their older iconic vehicles." They could be lying though. I guess we will just have to have faith that Cummins will not screw over its customers by selling them an engine that did not have Uncle Sam's stamp of approval on it.

But actually I remember reading that this motor was developed with money from the US Dept of Energy. So being that the US Gov't bankrolled the development I would assume they would get all the proper approvals to be legal in all 50 states. But maybe not.

Interesting. I had thought an engine needed to be tested and qualified in a vehicle platform to be EPA legal for on road use.

I'll see them again tomorrow - other than the 50 state issue, any questions?

The project started back in 2011 so you are most likely right, the engineers and management probably didn't even bother to get it tested and certified. I bet it never even occurred to them. Stupid, lazy Americans.

You seem to have misunderstood the purpose of my statement. I was not trying to say it is not true. I was just clarifying why I had asked.

Price and warranty details.

Steve said the warranty would be different for the two different tunes.
@ Expo he indicated the jeep he had in the pictured add had been emissions tested and they were just waiting for the engine certification. He also indicated that the certification would be up to appx the 2002 model year requirements.

That would be a deal killer for me.
Be nice if they would retro the requirements to the model year of the vehicle it goes in.

If they are certifying it for a 2002 Wrangler it shouldn't need exhaust treatment. 2004 is when it all went to pot.

How about crowd sourcing the cost of developing the adapters, engine mounts necessary for a quality end product? First lucky person (victim) still gets to pay for the engine etc etc

I don't know crap about Cummins. I thought really just 4BT or 6BT... I'm learning much more every day-- so lucky to have folks here. Diesel is still new to me-- but diggin what I'm learning. Interested in cost of this crate too...

Scouting around, the Cummins to NV3550 connection has been figured out by the Jeep boys.

Looks like there is already a NV3550-lt230 adapter out there as well Land Rover LT230 Transfer Case Adapter Plate to NV4500/NV3550 | eBay made by "Nick".

So I think the need for drivetrain adapters is met if we can get Nick to make more. If not we'll have to reverse engineer the adapter. That leaves the engine mounts (Mercedes?) and modifying the propshaft length.

Neither is rocket science.

You make it sound so easy. Lol
I guess the thinking part is the hard part followed by the fabrication.

Spoke with the Cummins repower crew at SEMA. They're looking at EE certification by next spring which will be retroactive to 1999. They refused to give a price other than stating, "comparable to any usual crate engine." Click image for larger version
