Cracked y-pipe

I spent some time tightening all the manifold bolts and the bolts connecting the manifolds to the y-pipe. At that point I could tell that I have a crack on the drivers side downpipe at the bend right below where it meets the manifold.

I seem to recall someone saying that a weld wouldn't hold. Is this true? Maybe weld a gusset to hold it?

Just a plain weld probably wouldn't hold, but if you gusset it or sleeve it somehow, that should make enough of a difference.

Considering the cost of a new Y-pipe, there's no reason NOT to at least try.

You've got that right! Hell, I could buy a nice welder for the cost of a new y-pipe.

I have a good shop here in LA that welded my Y in exactly that place, and it held for months and never failed, before I went to a larger diameter pipe and replaced it. I think it's fine if you have a quality independent do the welding....

The Y-pipe is Stainless steel so you'll have to have it TIG welded - lot easier to do properly if the pipe is off the truck.

Charles, EuroSport in Lorton has successfully welded Brian's manifold, you might want to call them.

Wait..... you're saying that the factory Y-pipe is already stainless? I'd assumed it was regular steel like the tailpipe and muffler that has already rusted to pieces on mine.

Hmmmmmmm......THAT could save me a few bucks if I can find a shop willing/able to just replace the cats for me.

Thansk for the tips guys. I'm going to get an estimate from a local shop - see if anyone local with a welder is crazy enough to help me do this, and go from there.

Tony, I'll give EuroSport a call - not sure I have the time to go down there to get an estimate.

If you're that desperate, I'll have a go at welding it for you. Oh, and it's not stainless. Or at least the factory y isn't.

Hehe. I dont call it desperate, but if it works for you

Yeah it doesn't look stainless to me.

I also need to cut off the aftermarket muffler thats been welded on it and weld on a flange so I can mount a stock muffler. I have everything except the hangers.

Still game? Lemmie know when you have time and where you want to do this

For the muffler, just get the flowmaster and clamps, though I could most likely burn that together for you too.

Sure, I'm game, only problem is that it'll have to wait until July as I'm getting hitched next weekend and won't be back from the honeymoon until the end of the month.

Let me know!

Hey Tony, no problem on the wedding there - you know my policy - your excused if it's your wedding I had forgotten you told me about that. Congrats in advance and have a great honeymoon if I don't talk to you before then.

If I can't scare up any help sooner, I'll definatley take you up on the offer!

Regarding the flowmaster, I already have a (used) stock muffler and tailpaipe, and a flange to weld on, so I'm all set there. A quiet muffler will be a welcome change for my current redneckish setup.
