Corrosion on body panel with no steel contact? Help!

Was hoping for some advice on how to treat/prevent this. I'd like to remove the corrosion and seal the area. It's on the inside of the front panels by the doors. How does this corrosion happen without steel contact? Can aluminum just corrode that badly on its own? Thanks!

Yes it can - just like any other metal. It will happen easily especially in environments with significant amounts of water and chlorides. Galvanic corrosion (corrosion in the presence of dissimilar metals) is just one form of corrosion. The form you are seeing is much more common than galvanic corrosion.

Generally speaking, this form of corrosion is accelerated by surface area. Mechanical polishing of the substrate is by definition removal.

Any method of corrosion protection will prevent this. Cathodic, barrier, chromating, phosphating, etc.
