Corrosion

I'm considering the purchase of an SW with minor blistering on the rear of the tub and back door. (5 spots smaller than half a dime) The rear cross member has some rusting near the joint of the frame and the cross member. The metal on the cross member is starting to swell. The rest of the truck is in real good shape. Does this sound like something that is typical of a 8+ year old truck and can be controlled/contained or should I be concerned? Thanks. Mark

Mike - I didn't get pictures today, unfortunately. Very little corrosion evident on the external surfaces of the cross member and rear-bumper. Looking through the wheel well to the rear cross member is where you can see the issue. Poking at it didn't reveal any soft areas. The attached file from a previous post on corrosion shows significantly more rust than the truck in question. My thought was to have a local shop waxoyl the underside and then have the blisters addressed. I'm concerned that I'm being too optimistic, so would appreciate any comments you might have. I did look at a second truck this afternoon. It had similar frame rust near the rear cross member - light surface rust with swelling of the metal of the rear cross member, but no blisters on the door or tub. It did have some blisters on the roof. Thanks. Mark

If it's just surface rust and not anything with depth or pitting, then I highly recommend Eastwood Rust Convertor. Just brushes on, dries to a nice satin black finish.

Also give a serious look to these areas as well.
-Between the gas tank and skid plate
-rear swaybar mounts on the skid plate
-bottom edges of the doors
-firewall, back and front, especially in the area of the brake and clutch cylinders.
