correct engine temp

i have a 97 d-90 with a 4.6. It seems to run ok, i was just curious what the proper engine temp range should be under normal driving conditions. mine seems to be around 210 degrees. also what level should the expansion tank be at when engine is cold? thanks for the help

Hi stephen,

the best answer is a couple of degrees above the opening temp of the thermostat, this can range from 77 to 88deg C on standard V8's so a running temp of 90deg with an 88 deg thermostat is common.

the rating of the 'stat will be stamped on it.

The level should be marked on the expansion bottle depending on the type, again however half full is always a safe bet.

I got 190F at the vdo dash gauge and measured 200F with the "laser gauge" aimed at the temp sensor housing.

I run about 190F. I have a 4-core radiator, Thermoflex fans. I rarely get to 200, but if I am traveling up hills in the mountains, I can. Nothing to really worry about until 210-220, IMO.

any other thoughts on this. I seem to get around the 190 mark in town but on the interstate I was 200-210 range running 70-75? I think those Hellas in front of the radiator might be part of the problem. TBD.
