Converting to 300tdi - question re: R380 fitting

I'm ditching my 3.9L and going to a 300tdi. I picked up a used motor and thought I had gathered all the things I needed but I saw a mention of a requirement to change the input shaft on the R380 and realize I don't have this in my conversion pile 'o stuff - if this is the case, what exactly is the change? Is this something that can be modified, or is a new shaft needed? What is the problem - different spline type? Different diameter or length?

How difficult is it to modify/change the shaft? I've not opened a manual trans before, and I was hoping to not take this one out of the truck for the swap...

Is this shaft unique to the R380 for the 300tdi? If so, and if I need to get this shaft, where can I find that in a relative hurry (eg not shipped from the UK...)

Thanks..

Yes, the input shaft is different, but that is all I know about it. Roadside Rob (Rob Dassler of Southwest Rovers) on this forum is the guy to talk to: 505-872-7818/505-270-8671. He is in Albuquerque, NM.

Swapping the shaft basically involves rebuilding the trans. The shaft is a different length and I hope you have the correct bellhousing too. Best best IMHO is to buy a new/rebuilt trans.

Oh, great.

Yes, I have the bell housing... but just the stock V8 R380 - apparently not the correct shaft. Where do I find one of those?

So much for doing a swap this weekend... unless one magically turns up in southern California.

The top cover is different as well. You mean you have the V8 bell housing, or the Tdi bell housing?

Yikes! sorry, I was thinking Disco V8 R380 to D90 300 Tdi. No need to change the top case if the gearbox is from a D90.
I'm putting my old D90 R-380 in my 95 Disco and wasn't thinking straight.

I have the TDi bell housing. So now I need the TDi input shaft... which apparently means rebuilding the transmission anyway. How difficult can that be! :-S

Anyone is S. Cal have a TDI R380 input shaft burning a hole in their garage?

And as usual...there are several different types available, depending on the gearbox suffix number:

Where is the tag on the R380? Or is it stamped in the case?

I've never cracked the case on a manual trans before - is this a PITA to change or should I take it to someone? What else should be replaced while it's open? Synchro's are OK-ish but that's probably the first thing to go, eh?

I have a core R380 from when I put the current one in 4-5 years ago which has bad synchros - might be easier to rebuild that so I don't have more parts splattered around...

Jason, just send Rob at SWR your spare trans.. he will rebuilt it and set it up for you correctly. He does great work. Then you can sell your other trans to make up some of the $$$$

I just talked to Rob on the phone, he doesn't have any in stock & we are looking at a couple of weeks (that's just for the part not any time for labor). I have this project in progress already and now that I shot myself in the foot (well, the guy I got it from said it would bolt up w/ the right bellhousing so my bad for not being more thorough) I am hoping not to have to wait potentially 3 weeks to continue....
