Computer temp

Where does the computer get the engine temperature?

In an effort to rule out high temps, I hooked up my hand held reader and the temp reads say 205.

The more or less brand new gauge and temp sender says 225 and the IR thermometer at the temp sender reads about 190.

On a 97 there is a seperate sender for the ECU. It's the 2 pin black one in the pic below. The temp gauge runs off the gold colored one behind it.
