Cold engine idle surges

I am sure this has been covered before, but here is my latest quirky thing:

The truck idles a little funny when it is warming up.

It surges between 1000-2000 rpms about 4-5 times before it stays at a smooth idle around 1000 rpms. A surge lasts about a second, and this usually only happens when you are decelerating to a stop, and only before it is completely warmed up.

After it is warmed up (about 5-10 minutes) it idles fine. I have a feeling this could be many things (mass air flow sensor, throttle position sensor, etc.) but something that I have not seriously looked into because it really only happens when the truck is warming up.

Any thoughts?

I've never had that problem on the d90, but with my range rover it did that, and it was the IAC (Idle Air control valve) also known as the stepper motor. You can take it out and clean it. they sell all kinds of lubes for it at napa.

Where is that?

I do not mean to ask a dumb question, but where is the stepper motor located?

If I am not mistaken . . .

The plenum chamber is the large alloy piece on top of your engine with 3.9 on it. The stepper motor/air bypass valve is at the rear of this, on the left hand side. It has a few wires going to it, with a black multi plug on the end. The unit looks like a large black nut, on the end of an inch long cylinder.
