Cold Climates, Old Diesels and Syn 5W

Whats the general consensus on using a modern, low zddp, synthetic 5W-40 such as Rotella T6 in older push rod diesels? I put it in last winter and up into the middle of Summer-about 5000 miles. Sure starts easier at -5F using it.

When I replaced the head recently there was a valve cap missing a wedge shaped piece and three of the rocker arms needed replacement due to rough spots. Obviously the worst being the one riding over the awol slice o pie, which I found. Was the wear due to the 5W? Probably not but a mechanic I used to go to suspects modern synthetic 5W ruins old pushrod motors.

Use a syn 5W for Winter and add something like STP Oil Treatment that has ZDDP?

Thoughts?

The T6 should be as good an oil as is possible for the engine. They use roller lifters and need no special additives.

I've never seen wear in one unless it was massively abused. If someone used new, OEM valve caps, that could be a problem as they have a 100% failure rate. You need to use aftermarket hardened ones. You have not been able to get good genuine ones for years.

Rizlone makes a good ZDDP, I use it in my 300.
I'm using the DELO fully Syn diesel oil.

Thanks guys. I replaced all of the valve caps with Turner's version. They looked different from what was in there, beefier and dark, not chrome.

I use M1 5w-50 in my 90. It has higher zddp than many current oils, cf rated and is bmw high performance diesel approved. Mobil's tech help, once I finally got past the marketing types, said it was good for the application.

Roller lifters shouldn't have the problems that "flat" tappets do with reduced additives in some modern oils, but i prefer heavier weight, higher additive oils in my older vehicles.
