Clutch Diagnosis

How might I go about fixing the problem I describe below?
  • my clutch was slow to return to the upright position.
  • and It progressively worsened
  • and then I couldn't select a gear
  • so I added brake fluid
  • and this helped
  • yet the clutch still misbehaves
  • sometimes it doesn't return to upright
  • and sometimes I can't select a gear
  • but pumping the clutch in neutral helps
  • and I see no evidence of a leak.
thanks.

If you added fluid...then there is a leak! It's a closed system which means the fluid has to go somewhere. Take a good look @ the slave cylinder and even unbolt it and see if you're leaking into the bell housing.

As was previously suggested, definitely check the flex line between the bulkhead and the slave cylinder at the transmission bell housing.

Also, with that many miles, it might be time for a slave cylinder or master cylinder... or both. My master went out with ~50,000 miles and the slave went out with about 90,000 miles.
