cluster lights

Hello all, buying a Defender this week and when I drove it at night the instrument cluster is very dim to the point it is hard to read the gauges. Is this common? Anything in particular I can do?

Please expect more stupid questions in the future

There is a flip switch down and to the left of the steering wheel on the 94 D90 that brightens or dims the instrument panel.

Search for "VDO Gauge Parts/Installation/Problems Merged Threads".

This is a very common problem and is permanently fixed by replacing the factory gauges with VDO Vision series ones.

At least you had dim and very dim. Most people have flicker and off.

replace the instrument bulbs with LED. Costs about $25. There are a number of threads on this. I did mine and it increased the brightness by 200%.

LED's are great but the stock gauges design do not transmit light very well. The needle in the speedo doesn't light up for example. A lot of people on here have upgraded to VDO gauges which in combination with LED is an even greater improvement.

Dox -- Welcome to Land Rover Defender ownership. I have had a 95 D90 since new and never once used the dash light dimming switch other than to see if it really worked like the owners manual said it should.

Once while driving from Hyannis, MA to Scottsdale, Az and after stopping in Holbrooke, AZ for gas at midnight ( the last stop) I got back in the car and there was not one photon coming out of any light on the dash. As I drove into my driveway 160 miles later, they started working again. Go figure-- Lucas--the Prince of Darkness--had struck again. Enjoy your new toy --they each have their own personality.

Go buy a couple of flashlights to keep in the cubby box.

As I was typing the previous reply, my daughter came home with the 03 Disco. She put the driver's window down to open the gate, and now it no longer works--will not go up or down. Normally it wouldn't be a problem, but tonight is one of the 5 nights a year that it is raining in Phoenix!!!!

I sincerely apologize "Lucas" for poking fun at you!
