Clicking sound with defender tdi 300

Hi guys,

I have an annoying clicking sound coming from the engine when the car warms up an is driving from around 40 kph upwards. Mechanic thought it was brake pump and I replaced it but its still there. Any ideas?

Thanks

If it clicks in constant time (doesn't change with the RPM's) put your finger on the purge valve to see it you can feel the vibration that matches the click. Had the same issue recently. It was my Hyundai purge valve ($21 instead of $200 for LR part) doing its job - but LOUDLY.

Its the fuel pump, trust me. The one attached to the block aside from the vaccum pump. Do you hear the clicking like if it came from the chassis, or engine bay?

Cheers,

The clicks increase with rpm but can't be heard when the car is stationary. Has to be moving. And the strange thing is that when the engine is cold you won't hear it for a while.

I have the same issue but can't remember if being warm or cold makes a difference.

Some on the web suggest the brake pump as well, I rebuilt mine not a long time ago...and it still leaks

If it does when stationary and you hear the clicking go under the car and touch (feel) the fuel lines that go on top of the chassis to the tank in the rear. If you feel like a pulse on them its the mechanical fuel pump for sure.

Check valve clearance if not the above.

Cheers,

No unfortunately the sound is only there when its moving. If its the fuel pump, does it need to be changed or can it be serviced?
Thanks

It cant be serviced as I know, I always change them, not expensive thing. It should do the clicking when stationary at some point if where talking the same thing.

I have not had the problem that you describe, but I am thinking it might be clutch/tranny related. Something on the input side of the gearbox.

It would be engine RPM dependent, and if the fault required it to be under load to make the noise, that would explain it not making noise when the truck is stationary.

This is purely guessing.

See if it clicks when the engine is warm by lugging the engine with the parking brake on. That would put the engine under load, but not have the input shaft spinning in the tranny. If it makes the noise, it is not the gearbox, and really is engine related.
