Thumbs down Clarion - service only through dealer?

Called clarion to send in the radio for repair (display died), and they tell me I can only get it fixed through the dealer. Anyone with experience on this? I feel like the dealer will take a few hundred bucks off me just to handle the shipping to and fro...

Might be cheaper just to replace it with another used radio that works. A lot of people upgrade and have the take outs available cheap-o.

Call John Monahan. He's been refurbishing LR radios for years. His website is: http://www.roverville.us/

Edit : David beat me to it.

Oh, that's so cool, thanks.

He lists $185. Seems like I could get somebody's take-out for $40...so is it worth it I wonder...

A word to the wise. Those displays go bad over time. Somebody's take-out could likely have a bad display, or be going bad. I just got an echange from Roverville, and it is just like new. 'got to listen to the depressing forecasts on the weather band the past few days (I hate hot weather).

now I just need to get around to fixing the odometer display again.

I think it has something to do with moisture. I had a watch die the same way. I had the battery replaced, and the stupid Jewelry Dep't clerk screwed up the gasket so that is was no longer moisture resistant. Some moisture got in, and that messed up the display. Even blowing it out with canned air and letting it bake for awhile didn't cure it.
