Check engine light

Help!

well I have had my Rover for almost a year and this is the first check engine lightup. I was up in the mountain and My temp gauge fell to C it was working off and on the whole weekend. now that I am back it seems to be fine. I am going to check coolant today but I dont see how the temp gauge would fluxuate so much. how do I reset the light on a 97? Should I look into buying a code reader?
Also I am about to turn 80,000 could that be the cause for the light.
and with that what is the maitnence for the 82,500 check?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Michael

Most likely it's either a wiring or bad sender. I'd start inspecting it for anything physically obvious like a near-broken wire or something like that, and also replace the sender either way.

97 you need a code reader to reset. The GEMS system will most likely recognizethe fault and it will light again. Codes will point you in the right direction. Could be anything from a leak in your intake to O2 Sensors...

I have this version and keep it in the truck, of course, with a printout of codes.

Search on Ebay for its successor - better and cheaper if purchased new. The newer version has code descriptions as well, although I do not know how specific they are for Rovers.

This version periodically scans for codes and shows impending codes as well. About the only thing lacking is a light to read the LCD in the dark but no big deal.

Hi Michael,

I have a code reader and I live in Tustin (near enough to Laguna Hills). Let me know if I can help.

Thanks Dave,
I may take you up on the offer. How often do you use yours do you think it would be a good thing to add to my garage if I bought one? I was looking at them on ebay they seem to be a cheap enough tool to be worth having. what do you all think. what is the recomended model.
ether way I would appreciate if you could help me read the codes before the one I may order comes. I could drive up any time just tell me when is good for you and Ill bring some beers ( that is the payment of choice for this forum right).\

Arthur Thanks for the info. that is what I wanted to know about the readers.

Hi Michael,

I just bought the code reader from Kragen a few weeks ago. It seems pretty full featured. I payed $99 after a $30 rebate. It's an Equus Innova, 3???. You're welcome to come by this weekend to try it out. With our trucks approaching the 10-year mark, I thought it best to get a reader. email me offline if you want. Dave
