Check Engine Light

The check engine light has been on and off (mostly on) for years. When it first came on a meeting of the minds (to include a friend who is a rover master mechanic) did some tests and figured it was a bad O2 sensor. Performance was not affected and I have no emissions inspections so it was left.

I changed the old fuel filter today and the light went off and has stayed off. Does this make sense of just a coincidence? Is the fuel filter linked to the check engine light in any way?

Thanks for the opinions.

Ah where to start with the CEL...
to answer your direct question.. Maybe low fuel pressure could starve the engine and trigger a CEL.. do you know which code it was throwing - you can check via the reader under the passenger side seat btw..
44 is left (drivers) and 45 is passenger side.
if you did not reset the battery then it should still show..
there is a process for reading all the codes as well..

having a code will effect your fuel economy..
Defenders don't wear out they just need more parts.
