Try to pull the code with a code reader. How many miles? Could be an O2 sensor...

Mine has been on for three years..... I was told that the only time you really need to heed it is when it is flashing, then call AAA!

What I did:
Check under your seat (Passenger) and see what the number is. Then reference that to fourfold.org and see if it's something major or something you can ignore. Next try and find that site that explains how to reset it on your own (it's a magazine article in something I think) or just live with it on.

Good luck!

I'm with Jesse & Burke...
Mine's been on since 02/02/02 when I drove my D-baby back from Miami, it came on... I've changed everything that has to do with the 'code' that it shot out, but it still came on... Runs great.

Next time you have your dash apart reset the check engine module yourself. Land Rover wanted about $150 to reset it, so I went home, took the dash off and reset it with a paperclip. It is a small brown module with a sticker over the hole you need to insert the paperclip into. I just got tired of it lit all the time.

What year truck is it? 94 and 95 have a display for the engine code up under the cardboard panels that the passenger is always kicking. It's the box all the way on the right labled "Diagnostic Display", inside is an LCD that shows the number of the engine code. Oddly enough, the box is sealed and you need to take the cover off to see the code (sometimes you can see it through the housing if it's not too bright out)

97 Defenders have the box located under the passenger seat.

On the 94/95 versions, it only monitors the fuel injection system. Normally it means a bad sensor somewhere. 97 trucks it also monitors the ignition.

In my '95 it's under the passenger's seat as well, but that may be something the PO did to it.

It's under the seat on 95's. Also, it comes on around 50K and 100K.

'can't help you without the model year. Different years used different systems.

Nope. 97's use OBDII. There's an OBDII connector behind the transfer case lever.

You're confusing "check engine" with "service engine". "service engine is just on a 85K mile timer. "check engine" is set when a code is stored by the OBD system, and indicates something out-of-spec was detected.

You misread it - its actually a "change engine light."

It means its time to convert to Tdi...
