Carbon Fiber

Any here use carbon fiber to build interior panels, or other parts?

Thanks

John

its not carbon, but Rich Hills over on the pirate board is laying up some pretty sweet body panels and roof out of some kevlar material. when i was over at his place he hit it with a punch and sledge and it didn't even make a mark....

I use composites all the time, some carbon, some kevlar, lots of fiberglass. Most of the stuff I'm familiar with is hand layed up in cnc machined molds we use for our composite sailplanes. Most of this work is very tedious, time consuming and done in eastern europe, but the finished products are amazing.

If your looking to do some home molding, it's not that hard actually. Some of the sites below have some howto video's etc. and all the supplies. I'm not a huge fan of their epoxies, I favor West Systems, but everything else they sell is top rate, including some bitchin new carbon/kevlar blends in colors (red, blue, green)... Pretty cool stuff, check out their site if your interested... not sure this answers your question or not. I've often thought of doing a mold for a new center console for my 97. There is so much wasted space on that thing, it's could use a new design....

Robert,

I couldn't agree with you more on the 97 console. A lot of wasted space and basically a piece of junk. And to top it off, the previous owner of my truck chopped mine up to fit in a subwoffer. So now I have a large, round hole in the rear and the entire storage area has been cut out.
I looked to replace it but they are asking $700 for a replacement. $700 for something I can't stand already does not work for me.
I keep thinking I am going to do something with it but haven't figured out what, as yet. Maybe I'll get with the builder helping me with my hot rod and we can come up with something. If you do have ideas, I would sure like to hear them.

Rick

Johnny,
Funny you mention this. I have been (albeit slowly) working on a carbon fiber (1 side for hand-layup) mold to reproduce the interior door panels on my 90 ST. The OEM ones basically suck as they break out around the edges and are very expensive to replace. My intent is to use some casting compound and the original to make a cavity, then hand-lay up carbon fiber, shoot it with epoxy and vacuum bag it and hope for the best. If I can pull this off, it should provide me with some cool carbon fiber interior door panels, and I may be able to make more. Is this what you are thinking?

Not to be a total jerk, but this quite possible could be the thread of all time. Next lets talk about how we can lower our D's and put on some 20in dubs.
