Check and double check everything, the solinoid that pins the shifter may in the end be what is causing you the trouble. IIRC it's on the passenger side of the shifter and has a couple wires. The Solinoid needs 12 volts to pull. The Key has to be on and the prake switch depressed there is a relay (on the right side footwell in a Disco) that energizes the solinoid. That relay or the power going to it could also be the problem.

I thought there was a switch under the brake pedal arm that is activated when you depress the brake. It is plastic and has a tendency to break at the worst times. The same happened to me in my 94 Disco and I could not take it out of park. Check it out. It's a plastic plunger looking switch.

Ah, I see it, the brake light switch he replaced, sorry.

Is there a shifter film or sheet that may have gone bad? It slides with the shifter at it's base. If it goes bad it can cause similar issues.

This might be one for the "did that already" but I once had the same problem and I had something physically blocking the shifter from moving. Is it maybe something like what happens when you park on a steep hill and the transmission is 'locked'? That is my two measly contributions....good luck.

Roverowner. He said that his brake lights don't come on, but I have seen a couple discos with pennies preventing them from leaving park.

I was about two minutes from sticking a rag in place of the fuel cap and lighting it when I finally saw the black pen keeping me from going in to Drive...

Have you reset the ABS system? There is a pink plug located under the driver seat and you need to short two of the wires. Search on rovers north forum for the procedure. My 2 cents.
