I was putting the RT fender back on the truck and I heard something hit the ground. Looked underneath and found this part.....anybody know what it is? I didn't take it off or remember seeing it.....89 D90 RHD 2.5 petrol....I am in the middle of a suspension lift, replacing all bushings and tie rod ends, shocks, springs, etc.
I think it's one of the many extras they put on these cars to mess with the owners down the road... It looks like some kind of spacer though, is it brass??
Just aim a flashlight around and look for a shiny spot, that taper looks like it fit in somewhere since its also shiny.
Could easily be something a mechanic dropped by accident into a crevice of the truck and never found. Discovered an engine mount bolt that way once....
All good thoughts....I've looked at every parts diagram on the truck and can't seem to find it. I did rebuild the carb last week, it runs great now, so not sure it's off the carb. Antennae was a good thought, but it doesn't show on the parts diagram. I was hoping it was the axle breather, but it doesn't look like the one's pictured for sale.
Hopefully someone will recognize what it is....before I find out the hard way.
I've noticed that most fixes on these imported trucks follow a certain sequence of being repaired:
1. If it leaks, put silicone on it.
2. If it won't stay, put a screw in it, not any screw...it has to be a shiny silver self taping type, 1/4" preferably
3. If a screw won't fit, superglue it
4. Cover it up with bondo or fiberglass, especially on the outriggers, you want them looking smooth
5. If none of the above works, then try to drive without it
6. Finally, if it is a necessity, put a used part in
7. Never, ever buy a new part
Wild guess here, but has your truck had its dipstick tube replaced? Kind of looks like the ferrule from the dipstick tube...the one that loosens over time, letting the dipstick tube sit lower and lower until "H" is <5 quarts. Ask me how I know this.
While scouring parts diagrams last night to find out what this piece was, my wife asked me what I was doing. I was too embarrassed to tell her I was trying to ID a part from a photo, which could be a bonnet buffer, the brass bushing from the speedo drive gear, a brass housing insert for a bolt, or some type of spacer for a rotating thingamajig....
It really needs to warm up so I can go out in the garage and work on my rover!

Made the deal on mine in early December. Had to wait a month to get it shipped. Drove it 2 times and the exhaust fumes almost killed me, so I parked it in the garage the second week of January. Ordered loads of parts, lift kit, tires, etc. Waited another month for the parts to clear customs....been working in the shop with below freezing temps outside with my trusty reddy heater. Now it still sits, waiting for the correct bushes to clear customs again, so I can install the front radius arms, get an alignment and start driving again.....I'm hopeful that I'll be driving again next weekend. Wish it was this weekend...it's supposed to be sunny and 70 degrees. Anybody got a buddy in customs???
Always tell her you're looking for something for her....birthday present, anniversary present, vacation planning. She knows you're probably lying anyways.

Well I don't suppose the part will ever be identified. I've asked several "Master LR" mechanics and none can name it. I think I'll put it back on the truck somewhere just so I can say I used it...
One good did come out of this post for me. The mention of the dipstick ferrule made me look a little closer at mine. After comparing the old to the new, I realized that the old had the truck running 1.5 qts low because the ferrule had slipped up on the tube.

Just open the bonnet and from 20 feet away and toss it in there.. Or act like you're working under the hood and that its a very delicate and important crucial unobtanium part and drop it in there.. There is no way it will hit the floor or EVER be found again..that's been my experience..
